9/7/06 Mid-week Buddy fix

Buddy doesn't like to have his picture taken and will nearly always turn away when the camera comes out. Maybe he figures he looks best in profile. I had wanted to get a pic of his tongue, but he would have none of it. He's a mix of Lab and Chow, so has black/purple spots on his tongue. That's the only way you'd know by looking at him that he's part Chow. He acts more like a Chow than a Lab; fearful of strangers and protective of his people. He's only a *happy-go-lucky* Lab with my husband and I. He has at least a hundred squeaky toys - half of which are usually spread around the living room and under the bed collecting dust bunnies. When he's not napping he loves to chase squirrels and bark at every person on foot that goes by the house. We call him "deputy dog" and he seems to like that name.

An interesting tidbit I heard from our dog behaviorist: Dogs, if they are dominant, don't like cameras because the shutter looks like an eye. That's why in so many photos of dogs are either profile, or you can see the whites of their eyes, which is a sign they are nervous.

I am glad I got to see Buddy, after reading about him in other posts. He looks very happy.

Just reading what Susan wrote, I wonder about the behavior of a little dog we used to have. When we got out the camera, she always pushed her way into the center of every shot.

I guess there's a ham in every bunch!

I'd read something similar, Susan. Like that you shouldn't ever look a dog you don't know directly in the eye because that is considered a challenge.

He is a pretty happy boy, Lynne. He is pointedly ignoring me in this pic and watching my DH (who he just worships!)

Sandy: I agree with Susan - a little ham!

He looks like a fine dog.

Thanks FC - he is. A bit slower lately and even more hard-of-hearing *grin* - but he's a great friend.
