3/21/07 Mid-week bunny fix

I've been trying to get a photo of the bunnies that shows their size relative to one another, but I'm afraid this isn't it.

;-)

If nothing else you get an idea of the kooky things I try to let everybunny have a little freedom without hurting one another in the process. Cricket is the big, big-eared bunny closest to the exercise pen that serves as a temporary fence. Little loppy-eared Peeper is on our side of the fence waiting for Cricket to get close enough so that she can attempt a bite at Cricket's nose through the fence. Boomer is reclining in a sunbeam in the background, unconcerned with the feminine territorial battle being played out before him. As long as he has a comfortable spot to nap in, he's happy.

Peeper weighs less than half what the Flemmies weigh, yet she is the more aggressive one and spent all her *out* time at the fence, rather than exploring the rest of the house. Once I got tired of keeping her from biting off Cricket's nose and put her back in *her* room, she promptly fell asleep for the remainder of the afternoon.

Exercise pens make a great safe place, indoors or out, to exercise a bunny that lives in a cage. They're also an excellent alternative to cages, so long as your bunny isn't a jumper. Peeper could never live in one because she can jump higher than the pen when she means to.

Do the bunnies get along with your cats?

No cats here Larry. Ever. I do have a nice dog though.

I wish you could har me giggling with glee reading this. They are so cute and your descriptions of their personalities and biting noses is comical! Sweet, sweet, sweet, Laura. Keep those mid-week Bunnie fixes coming. I'd love to meet them in person and witness those "disapproving" behaviors!

Yay, bunnies! I've been so lucky with Tidbit that she doesn't need to be caged. My previous bun couldn't be free-range 24/7, though.

Bunnies have such interesting personalities! And that fencing looks nice!

Buunygirl: If I had just one, or just Boomer and Cricket they could live free-range (Boomer and Cricket practically do).

I wish I had five bunnies that got along with one another.

Mine live in pens that my DH made special - nice and roomy and easy to keep clean.

Mary: It would be neat for you to meet them, although like little kids, they're shy around strangers.

Those exercise pens are so great - now that my dogs are gone I loan them to neighbors. It's neat to look across the street and see them getting some use in my neighbor's front yard. As he putters in the garage I get to watch the new pup exploring the Spring air :0)

I'm lucky with Niblet too--he's free range in two rooms, but he refuses to step off the carpet onto the wood floors, so we can keep cords etc. away from him. He and the kitties get along great, playing chase and everything. He's a good little bun.

I love the one lone doot in the picture. Orlando is a big time jumper so he has to stay behind a 5 foot gate or in a large cage when I'm not home.

I laughed at that emphatic "Ever."
Good bunny fix! They all look quite content. We had a black Flemish named Selma Busynose and she weighed in at 22#. She shared her hutch with RadoBody (What happens when you let a 3 year old name the bunny), a very small silver lop. They got along famously. Rado used to snuggle up on Selma's big dewlap. :-)

I am amazed at the territoriality of the bunnies--or really the bunny Peeper. I guess I shouldn't be, as cats and dogs can be very territorial.
I look forward to the mid-week bunny fixes.
